Description
The Pool of Bethesda 1877, Robert Bateman (1842–1922) was an English painter, architect and horticultural designer. He was the third son of James Bateman FRS (1811–1897), the accomplished horticulturist and landowner, who built Biddulph Grange and its gardens, in Staffordshire.
Along with his elder brothers John and Rowland, Robert was educated at Brighton College from 1855-1860. From 1863 to 1867, he was a student at the Royal Academy schools. From about 1870, he was the leader of a group of artists inspired by the art of Edward Burne-Jones. He was a founder of the Society of Painters in Tempera in 1901.
